PFT

Pulmonary Function Test

The test consists of a series of non-invasive breathing maneuvers to objectively measure how well the lungs are working.

MCT

Methacholine Challenge Test
The test consists of a series of non-invasive breathing maneuvers while a small amount of inhaled medication (Methacholine) is given to test for reactive airways.

FeNO

Fraction of Exhaled Nitric Oxide

A test that measures the level of nitric oxide gas in an exhaled sample of your breathe.

ABG

Arterial Blood Gas 
The test is used to check how well the lungs are able to move oxygen into the blood and remove carbon dioxide. It is a blood test that measures the acidity, levels of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) from an artery.

CPET

Cardio-Pulmonary Exercise Test
The test consists of controlled exertion while monitoring breathing and vitals.

6MWT

The 6 Minute Walk Test gives the doctor an objective measure of your functional capacity. It measures the distance that you can walk quickly on a flat hard surface in a period of 6 minutes. Your oxygen level is monitored during this test.

Spiro

Spirometry is a physiological test that measures inhaled and exhaled volumes of air as a function of time. It is just one component of a complete pulmonary function test.

MIPs & MEPs

This is measurement of breathing muscle strength using measurements of maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP or PImax), and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP or PEmax).

Bronch

Bronchoscopy is a procedure that looks inside the lung airways. It involves inserting a bronchoscope tube, with its light and small camera, through your nose or mouth, down your throat into your trachea, or windpipe, and to the bronchi and bronchioles of your lungs.

Sleep

In a level 3 sleep study (a home sleep study) a small machine is used in the comfort of your home at night to monitor oxygen saturation, heart rate, air flow and effort while also recording details about snoring and position. It will help your doctor diagnose obstructive sleep apnea and even assess severity.

Respiratory Therapists

Andrew |Senior RRT |

The Senior RRT in the at U-Breathe Pulmonary Function Laboratory. He is a Registered Respiratory Therapist, and his work has focused around respiratory diagnostics and patient education. He graduated from SAIT in 2015 and joined the U-Breathe team in January 2019. Andrew enjoys being involved in the process of empowering patients in their understanding of their lung condition diagnosis, how to properly manage their condition, and ultimately seeing the improvement in their health over time.

Joining our team in 2016, Zahira is a Registered Respiratory Therapist and a representative of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) here at the clinic. 

She is also a Certified Respiratory Educator. She strives to assist patients with their lung conditions through performing lung diagnostic tests, educating about respiratory diseases, and instructing on proper inhaler techniques.
Outside of the clinic, Zahira lives an active lifestyle and you can frequently find her out in the mountains on a hike with her children.

Tammy graduated from SAIT in 2015 and has worked at U-Breathe since that time. She enjoys working with the variety of patients who present to the clinic with various lung conditions. She takes a personalized approach to helping patients understand their diagnosis, manage their lung conditions and further their education so they can live their best lives moving forward.

Sobia is a nurse at U-Breathe. She is knowledgeable, caring and does her best. She supervises the severe asthma clinic at U-Breathe and ensures that patients are receiving the very best care.

Pavel enjoys making a positive impact on people’s lives. Working at U-Breathe gives him the opportunity to help patients today and through coordination of research, those of tomorrow too. He completed his Bachelor of Science at the University of Alberta and joined the team in January 2019.
